Wife begs for her husband's release after been arrested for setting her ablaze during domestic dispute

A woman who was allegedly set ablaze by her husband during a domestic dispute in Lokoja, Kogi State, has pleaded for his forgiveness despite the attack.

Mrs Berida Irawo was reportedly attacked by her husband, Jacob Irawo, at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja, on Friday, August 14, 2026.

Preliminary findings indicate that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after Berida allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes without his permission, believing he no longer needed them.

The development reportedly angered Jacob, who allegedly threatened his wife before fetching petrol from his motorcycle and setting her on fire.

A fresh update on the incident emerged after Pastor John Esiga Abu visited Berida at the hospital on Tuesday, August 18.

Abu said the victim was in stable condition and expected to be discharged in the coming days.

He further disclosed that Berida had pleaded for her husband’s forgiveness despite the horrific attack.

According to the pastor, some of Jacob’s behaviour and statements immediately after the incident appeared incoherent, raising concerns about his mental state.

Abu therefore stressed the need for Jacob to undergo proper mental evaluation as authorities continue to deal with the case.

The incident has renewed concerns about domestic violence and the need for couples to seek appropriate help when marital disagreements escalate.
